The Denver Astronomical Society Astrophotography Special Interest Group (ASIG) July Member Gallery

Each month, the Astrophotography Special Interest Group (ASIG) of the Denver Astronomical Society gathers to share one of the most inspiring parts of our hobby—the images we’ve captured of the night sky. From stunning galaxies and colorful nebulae to detailed views of the Moon and planets, members present their latest work, talk through how the images were created, and exchange tips, techniques, and stories from behind the lens. It’s a chance to celebrate progress, learn from one another, and stay motivated under the stars.

August 12 Solar Eclipse Sequence . All the images here were made with a stock Canon EOS R5 MirrorlessDigital Camera and a EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens with a Canon 1.4x IIIteleconverter giving 560 mm at f/8 from a ship about 30 miles off the coast of Spain.The partial phases were made at 560 mm (1.6 arc-seconds per pixel).Exposure at the start of the eclipse was 1/640 second, f/8, ISO 400,then 1/500 second.After totality, the exposures were 1/500 second, f/8, ISO 800. Thesecond half of the partial phase post totality had the Sun lower and the exposures were1/320 second, f/8, ISO 1600. All partial phases were made with a Thousand Oaks frontmounted solar filter.The totality camera was set for a bracketing sequence of 7 exposures:1/3200, 1/1000, 1/320, 1/100, 1/32, 1/10, and 1/3 seconds at ISO 400, f/11.

August 27 Lunar Eclipse Sequence. About every 20 minutes during umbral phases. Taken with Canon 80D DSLR mounted piggyback on tracking telescope, 400 mm Tamron lens at f11, ISO 800, Exposures ranged from 1/3200 sec to 1.6 sec. All exposures were set for the lighted side of the Moon, except the middle two images were set for the shadowed side.

August 27 Lunar Eclipse Sequence. Here’s another eclipse sequence. It is made from mostly the same individual images as my previous sequence (but used only shots exposed for the brightly lit side of the Moon), but I positioned each shot according to the position of the Moon in relation to Earth’s shadow at the time each shot was made (information I found on the Internet). The result shows the shadow of the Earth as the dark area below the moons.

Rho Ophiuchi Complex. Complex that I shot last May from a field in NE New Mexico. I used a MiniCat 51 and an ASI6200MM Pro with Chroma L,R,G, and B filters. I used Pixinsight with the RC Astro tools and did some final color tweaking with the Apple Photos editor. I’ve been struggling with Pixinsight for several months and this is the first image that I’m actually happy with.

Arcade Loop (The Peacock Prom). This was taken with my Daystar Quark Chromo, SVBONY102MM Achro and Player One Apollo 428M. This was approx. 800 SER files at 1000 frames per SER. Best 6% used. Stacked in Autostakkert, sharpened and aligned in IMPPG, colorized and combined in Photoshop, final touches in Davinci Resolve.
1,000,000 Frames. This time-lapse was created from 1,000 individual SER recordings, with 1,000 frames captured in each—one million frames of solar data! Captured with the skywatcher Heliostar 76, player oneApollo 428M MAX and Baader 2.25x Barlow. Stacked and aligned in AutoStakkert, sharpened in ImPPG, finished in Photoshop and assembled in DaVinci Resolve.
