The Denver Astronomical Society (DAS) is thrilled to announce our new Outreach Coordinators who are bringing fresh energy, professional experience, and a shared passion for inspiring others through astronomy.
Maria Schanhals
Maria Schanhals is a Planning Analyst with South Suburban Parks & Recreation, a backyard astronomer, and a proud cat mom of two. Though new to DAS, Maria is eager to dive into the community and help coordinate events that inspire the next generation of astronomers. With several years of high-level, full-cycle event coordination in the athletics industry, Maria brings a wealth of organizational expertise — and now she’s turning her focus to the stars.
Justin Cirillo
Justin Cirillo has been active in astronomy outreach since 2014. As a former member of the Central Florida Astronomical Society and a Planetarium Specialist for the Emil Buehler Planetarium at Seminole State College in Orlando, he’s led countless events at science centers, libraries, schools, and parks. Now a Park Ranger with South Suburban Parks & Recreation, Justin brings a deep love for astronomy and a drive to connect communities with the cosmos.
What Outreach Means

Outreach is more than just pointing telescopes at the sky. It’s about creating moments of wonder — the kind that stay with someone for life. Whether it’s a child seeing Saturn’s rings for the first time or an adult rekindling their curiosity about the stars, outreach is our way of opening minds and expanding horizons.
Why We Do It
Most of us remember the first time we truly connected with the night sky — whether through a telescope, a planetarium, or a conversation with a mentor. That sense of awe and discovery is what drives our outreach efforts. When we volunteer, we don’t just share knowledge; we pass on the joy that brought us to astronomy in the first place.
It’s Easier Than You Think
You don’t need to be an expert to make a difference. Outreach volunteers come from all backgrounds and experience levels. Some bring telescopes; others simply bring a smile and an eagerness to talk about the stars. Whether you can give a few hours a month or only help at the occasional event, there’s a place for you.
Get Involved

Maria and Justin are excited to grow the DAS outreach program and support our volunteers every step of the way. If you’ve ever thought about getting involved — or are just a little curious — we encourage you to reach out. Let’s share the wonder of the universe together.
