The Denver Astronomical Society is proud to announce that Pavlina Karafillis has joined the Board of Trustees, stepping into the role previously held by longtime board member and Outreach Coordinator Dave Catlin. We offer our heartfelt thanks to Dave for his years of generous service and leadership in helping DAS bring the wonders of the night sky to the public. In addition to her role as Trustee, Pavlina has also volunteered to be the new DAS In-Reach Coordinator.
Pavlina Karafillis

Pavlina Karafillis is a mechanical engineer who works on mechanisms for deep space missions including the Perseverance Rover and Mars Sample Return. She was introduced to astronomy at the age of 8 when her parents would stargaze with a homemade telescope and share their knowledge of the myths behind the constellations. Today, she enjoys using her telephoto lens to photograph both stars and starlings (or other wildlife)! Passionate about science communication and hands-on experimentation, she is excited to support and learn with a community of people who share her interest in astronomy and space. As a trustee and the new In-Reach Coordinator, she supports the DAS mission to promote the understanding and enjoyment of astronomy. Pavlina holds a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from MIT.
What In-Reach Means

While Outreach events bring the night sky to the public—at parks, libraries, and schools—In-Reach events are designed specifically for our members, especially those who are newer to astronomy. These monthly gatherings, hosted at DU’s Historic Chamberlin Observatory, offer a welcoming environment where experienced club members share knowledge, provide hands-on observing tips, and help members grow in skill and confidence. It’s a space where questions are encouraged, and learning happens shoulder to shoulder under the stars.
Get Involved
We look forward to a new season of In-Reach events under Pavlina’s leadership. If you’re an experienced DAS member and want to help inspire and educate fellow members, we’d love to have you involved. Reach out to us at inreachcoordinator@denverastro.org to learn more or volunteer.
Stay tuned to our events calendar for upcoming sessions—and if you’re a newer member looking to learn, this is the place for you.
