Astronomy and Ramadan

In response to a request that was originally received via the DAS Facebook page, DAS members Ron Hranac and Dena McClung joined members of the Rocky Mountain Islamic Center on the eastern edge of Sloan’s Lake on the evening of March 21 to attempt to spot the tiniest sliver of the newborn moon. This would have enabled local Muslims to begin the holy month of Ramadan one day early, but clouds on the western horizon and a tight interval of separation between the setting sun and the moon thwarted the effort. The Sacred Emblem of Immortality

By Daniel Acker According to Egyptian records from about 2,000 BC, Cancer the Crab, as we know it today, was described as Scarabaeus, the sacred emblem of immortality. Much later, in Greek mythology, Cancer is associated with Hercules and Hydra, when Hercules was doing battle with the multi-headed Hydra and Hera, the disgruntled wife of Zeus, sent Cancer, the giant crab to help Hydra kill Hercules. On the night of March 4th, the Denver Astronomical Society held their annual spring banquet and announced the 2023 Executive Board. Chamberlin Observatory Tours

The Denver Astronomical Society hosts weekly and monthly events* at the University of Denver’s historic Chamberlin Observatory, which features its prized 1894 Alvan Clark-Saegmuller 20-inch refracting telescope. The Observatory serves as the DAS home base for numerous Astronomy Nights, Open Houses, and special events throughout the year.

Due to overwhelming demand, we are changing how we reserve our Astronomy Nights and adding more to the calendar. For details, see our Reservations page.

Astrophotography Special Interest Group

The Denver Astronomical Society (DAS) has established a Special Interest Group amongst its members devoted to Astrophotography. Do you want to learn or improve your skills in astrophotography? Do you enjoy viewing pictures of the Sun, Moon, Planets, or Deep Sky Objects? Can you take similar images? You may have skills that you could pass on to novice members. The Van Nattan-Hansen-Anderson Scholarship

Established in 1973, the DAS Van Nattan-Hansen-Anderson Scholarship supports graduating high school and undergraduate college students majoring in astronomy and the physical sciences. Interested and eligible students are invited to apply for funding on the Scholarship Page.
