Quarterly Letter from the President – October 2026

Greetings to all of you who are interested in Denver Astronomical Society, follow us on social media, may be considering joining the DAS, and those who are just looking for astronomy-themed activities.  We have much to offer.  Please check the calendar of events on our website (https://www.denverastro.org/das-events/event-calendar/) for future activities!

DAS participated in the Artemis II event at Red Rocks on August 3rd, including their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fair.  This event attracted over 8,000 attendees!  We sponsored a booth where we provided information to those in attendance and signed up a number of new members.  Our participation was part of our Outreach program and it was very successful.

If you weren’t able to attend our combined International Observe the Moon and Open House event on Saturday, September 19th, you missed an enjoyable time.  We had many great partners set up booths that provided information, activities, and cool giveaways like rocket-shaped pens!  Several DAS members brought their telescopes and set them up for public viewing.  We also had activities for children.  This was a great opportunity for anyone interested in astronomy to view the night sky through a variety of telescopes.  Plus, our telescope operators are very knowledgeable about the night sky.  We also assisted several guests who own telescopes but needed help setting them up.

Our monthly Open House events, including September’s combined International Observe the Moon Night/Open House, are free to the public.  As with most Open Houses, guests were able to tour DU’s historic Chamberlin Observatory and look through the 20-inch Alvan Clark-Saegmuller refractor telescope.

Weather during the September 19th event started with sunshine, followed by clouds and some rain, then a clearing sky; 200 to 300 guests braved the weather and enjoyed an evening full of activities and viewing opportunities.  We hope to host a similar event next year so please check our calendar!

DAS offers a wide variety of astronomy-related events and activities throughout the year. If you’ve thought about joining the Society, an individual membership is only $36 per year and a dual/family membership is $60 per year.  In addition to supporting the many things we do, our very affordable membership comes with many other benefits. See https://www.denverastro.org/membership/.

The Denver Astronomical Society is a community of astronomers of all levels, ages, and interests, from novices to experts. We provide so many opportunities for engagement, learning, and sharing the joy of observing the universe.  I encourage you to attend our events and to join us so you can benefit from the many aspects of membership.  Here’s a link to our main website: https://www.denverastro.org/

Sincerely,
