Sharing the Wonder: We Need Your Help with DAS Outreach

The Magic of First Encounters

Remember the first time you peered through a telescope and saw the Moon’s craters, or the rings of Saturn? Or maybe the moment you first learned about the night sky in a planetarium, or when a teacher, parent, or grandparent showed you the constellations. Those first sparks of wonder stay with us forever — they’re what make astronomy so special. That’s what outreach is all about: sharing those first moments of awe with others. The Denver Astronomical Society (DAS) has a rich tradition of bringing the universe down to Earth for people of all ages — but we can’t do it alone. We need your help!

How Outreach Works

Our outreach programs include star parties, classroom visits, public events, and more. We rely on volunteers who are passionate about sharing the night sky. You don’t need to be an expert to help — just bring your excitement and a willingness to connect with others.

The Impact

We receive letters every year from young people, scout clubs, school classrooms, and other organizations that express what the simple gift of looking through a telescope for the first time means to them. Here is just one example of the letters we get.

Dear Mrs. McClung and Mr. Everett,

Thank you so much for taking the time to teach us about astronomy and showing us the stars. I loved getting to see Saturn and the moon up close.

Sincerely,
Rylie Roybell

This powerful reminder of how outreach can change lives and inspire curiosity shows why every small effort matters. Every time we inspire someone to look up at the night sky, we help light the path for future astronomers.

It’s Easier Than You Think

We understand that stepping into outreach volunteering can feel overwhelming. Maybe you worry that you don’t have enough experience to answer questions or operate equipment. Or your busy schedule might make it hard to commit to regular events. Some might feel unsure about what exactly volunteering entails or worry about transportation to events.

But here’s the good news — outreach volunteering is flexible and welcoming to all experience levels. You don’t need to be an expert astronomer; your enthusiasm and willingness to share what you love are the most important things. Many outreach activities allow for short, occasional commitments that fit into your busy life.

If getting to events is a challenge, we can help connect you with members nearby or arrange carpooling. Sometimes just a small role — like setting up equipment, welcoming visitors, or sharing simple facts — can make a huge difference. Remember, every conversation about the stars has the potential to inspire someone’s lifelong passion.

Our outreach team supports volunteers every step of the way to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible. We believe anyone who wants to help share the wonders of the night sky can do so — and we’re here to make sure you succeed.
