Dr. Paul Hemenway

Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy,
University of Denver

“Robotic Exploration of the Solar System.”

Dr. Paul Hemenway is a retired astrometrist who now teaches courses for DU’s Enrichment Program. He received his PhD in astronomy at the University of Virginia in 1974 while doing Very Long Baseline Interferometry at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. He then spent the next 18 years as part of the Hubble Astrometry Science Team, at the University of Texas. Among other projects, his main work with Hubble was to help tie the HIPPARCOS reference frame to the VLBI radio reference frame. He also spent 10 years working on a project to use 30 asteroids to find errors in the fundamental coordinate system, and 2 years working on the Gravity Probe B mission at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
