David Elmore, 2019 DAS Spring Gala Speaker

Presentation by David Elmore

Cooperative Solar Research and Instrumentation Development

David Elmore is an Astronomer Emeritus for the National Solar Observatory (NSO) in Boulder.  He earned a Masters in Astrophysics from CU and went to work for the High Altitude Observatory (HAO) as its observer at the Sacramento Peak Observatory, operating HAO’s instruments attached to solar telescopes in Sunspot NM.  At HAO, David became involved in software, optical, and systems engineering and designed solar research instruments that have been installed at several terrestrial observatories as well as being flown on a balloon and spacecraft.

Most recently Mr. Elmore was Instrument Scientist for the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope.  NSO is completing construction of this largest ever solar telescope on Haleakala Maui.  He worked with collaborators on the designs of first-light instruments and the polarization measurement capabilities of the DKI Solar Telescope.  In addition, he was the first volunteer for the Citizen Continental-America Telescope Eclipse (CATE) Project. In his presentation, David will describe the CATE project, coordination, training, instrumentation, results of the eclipse observations, and future plans.
