“Beyond Pluto: New Horizons Flyby of Ultima Thule”

Dr. Fran Bagenal

Dr. Fran Bagenal

Research Scientist at the Laboratory of Atmospheric and Space Physics

We are delighted to have Dr. Bagenal return to Olin Hall with yet another fun and informative presentation! If you’ve never heard her speak before, you are in for a TREAT!

On January 1, 2019, New Horizons made the first close flyby of a small Kuiper Belt Object, coming within roughly 3500 km of MU69, nicknamed Ultima Thule. The New Horizons team discovered MU69 using the Hubble Space Telescope in 2014. MU69 is the most primitive body ever studied by any planetary spacecraft.

In her talk, Dr. Bagenal will review the observations from New Horizon’s flyby of Ultima Thule and their implications for understanding our solar system.
